Volunteer Interest

Active member participation is crucial to our success! We have a variety of volunteer activities ranging from one-time projects to on-going committee and board work. Some of the activities involve scheduled meetings and/or events, but much of it is work that can be done remotely on your own schedule. Are you interested in chairing an event or committee? Want to start off small and work on just one aspect of an event? Or maybe it’s somewhere in between. Regardless, we can find the perfect volunteer spot for you. Please indicate which of the following areas you are interested in joining or learning more about.

Fundraising

Fundraising is crucial to our organization. The Incredible Edibles Sale remains our largest and most visible fundraiser, but we also raise funds through raffle, merchandise, book, and native plant sales. A tremendous amount of up-front planning goes into these events and we also depend on a large contingent of volunteers the day of an event.

Member Connect

Help build community and strengthen the bond with fellow MGs by joining the Member Services group. We welcome individuals to help with annual membership renewals, awards & recognition, volunteer retention & coordination, and creating fun member events (i.e. harvest festival, greens gathering, garden tours, field trips).

Education

Education is at the core of who we are. Volunteers plan and lead workshops and presentations, as well as work behind the scenes to organize valuable educational events such as Education in the Garden, community garden classes, and the monthly Speaker Series. Even during times that we do not have in-person contact due to Covid safety precautions, we remain innovative and keep education central. For example, we work with community partners to distribute gardening supplies and information to gardeners throughout diverse communities. We share relevant and science-based gardening information through social media.

Communication

Communication comes in many forms and has become even more important in the digital age. This committee is responsible for producing the eNews and Grapevine newsletters, and managing the MCMGA website and social media presence. All volunteers are welcome and in particular we look for volunteers with experience in writing, photography and social media.

Demonstration Garden

The Demo Garden is ground zero when it comes to hands-on gardening. Volunteers help with the mechanics of the garden (building & repairing raised beds, irrigation systems), actively garden (planting, weeding, pruning, harvesting), and perform the necessary behind-the-scenes tasks (reporting, community liaison, Backyard Certification program). And through it all, you get to volunteer shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the most experienced MGs in the county.
