Our speakers are horticultural experts speaking on a range of gardening and environmental topics. The events are free and all are welcome. The Speaker Series is presented on the second Tuesday of the month, January through November.

It’s not a secret that we gardeners have a habit of killing plants. In this presentation, Mary-Kate Mackey examines why we do that and how we can garden for more successful outcomes. With years of experience in the Pacific Northwest, she focuses on the tough, hardy, and resilient plants that survived. Grow some of these, and your gardening life just got more care-free—and fun.

Mary-Kate Mackey is a lively and engaging speaker who offers great ideas for problem-solving in the garden. She’s an award-winning writer and the recipient of nine GardenComm media writing awards, including a Gold in 2021 for her column, “Rooting for You,” on the Hartley-Botanic Greenhouse website. Her byline has appeared in numerous magazines such as Fine Gardening, Horticulture, Sunset, and This Old House. Mary-Kate’s newest book, co-authored with Kathleen Brenzel, is The Healthy Garden—Simple Steps for a Greener World. With the help of 20 featured garden experts and glorious photography, The Healthy Garden explores why nourishing a more resilient landscape has the power to transform, not only the garden and the gardener, but the greater natural world.
