There is a popular view that native plants serve our pollinators best and gardeners ought to design their landscapes with these plants in mind. Yet, in our modern urban landscapes the environment, including the soil, has been altered from that which supported the native flora and fauna.
Join our May Speaker Series as Al Shay from Oregon State University’s Horticulture Program will share his experiences and insights on navigating the conflicting opinions on supporting our pollinators and adapting to our changing environment in our landscaped gardens.
Al Shay holds undergraduate degrees in fine art from Hunter College/CUNY, BS in Horticulture from Oregon State University (OSU), and a Masters in Agriculture from OSU.
Al’s current area of focus is sustainable Horticultural practices for the residential and commercial landscape. Plants that function as sources of food, fuel, fiber and medicine along with habitat creation for a wide array of floral and faunal elements are a major theme. He is a licensed landscape contractor, an International Society of Arboriculture certified arborist and is a certified exterior landscape technician through the National Association of Landscape professionals.
